Spiritual Garden of Rmembrance

The Spiritual Garden of Remembrance (An Gáirdín Spioradalta) was completed in May 2010. Below there are photographs taken from a builder's hoist on a beautiful day that same month. Immediately after them are photos taken at ground level on an equally beautiful day in June 2010.
It all began in July 2007 with the reclaiming of a rough and over-grown piece of land at the back of the church in Askeaton. A certain amount of levelling of the ground was carreid out. The section of land was marked off with a concrete fence. The development did not progress further that year.
In 2008 the site was further levelled off and a panelling erected inside the concrete fence. A breach was made in the wall behind the church, the immediate reason being to provide easy access but which ultimately became the present entrance to the garden.
Across 2008 and 2009 the garden developed and some features were added, including a waterfall, bridge, rockery, pathways, pergola and árasan, as well as stone infills -a photo from constructing the labyrinth has also snuck in!
The labyrinth was laid out and completed through the months of February, March and April 2010. It involved drawing up the plan and design and marking these out on the ground, followed by our carpenters making a wooden frame, the delivery and pouring of the concrete and, finally, the completion of the centre of the labyrinth in limestone and marble
The Árasán and the well were also constructed between February and April 2010, the Árasán being put to good use with the arrival of 'angels of mercy' with very welcome sustenance.
An Gáirdín Cuimhneacháin (The Spiritual Garden of Remembrance) was officially opened and blessed on Sunday, 30th May 2010.
