New Paragraph
These are some photographs, taken in April 2020, of the outside of Askeaton Church (the doors and window frames have recently been re-painted). It includes some particular features also: the inscription plaque over the main entrance, the holy water font, one of the pillars at the entrance to the church grounds, graves of former parish priests (and one curate) and the stone erected to commemoracte the 150th anniversary of the building of Askeaton Church in 1851.
Photos of the interior of Askeaton Church, taken on various occasions, in March 2015, November 2015 and April 2016.
This is an effort to give a sample of the seasons as marked in the church: the November tree that commemorates our dead with the names of deceased individuals written on the leaves (November 2015); the Christmas tree, decorated with self-made Christmas figures by the sixth class pupils in the National School (2007); the Crib (Christmas 2015); the Easter Garden (May 2008) and the Feast of Pentecost (2007 and 2017). You will notice the differences in the reredos (the backdrop to the altar) -more on this later.
Some other featurese of the church, given here, are explained under, 'Parish Churches'.
The graves of two former parish priests, Fr. Edward Cussen, who was responsible for building the present church, and Fr. James Hickey, his second next successor in the parish, had been covered over in the church renovations that were carried out in 1977. It had long been hoped that we would find a way to open up the grave slabs (grave tiles, as it transpired) for view again. This we managed to do through the efforts of four excellent craftsmen in November 2019.
And then there was the snow in January 2010
Fortunately, it was discovered in May 2014 that the axel for the bell over the main door had almost corroded. The bell had to be removed, the wooden axel replaced with a metal one, and the bell hoisted back into position.
